How to choose a free arpeggiator
Arpeggiator plugins sit between your MIDI keyboard and your synth, turning held chords into rhythmic patterns. The useful free ones go well beyond up/down/up-down: look for pattern storage, probability and ratcheting.
- Pattern memory lets you switch sequences live instead of editing one global pattern.
- A latch/hold mode is essential for playing progressions one-handed.
- MIDI-out support determines whether the plugin can drive any instrument or only its own engine.
- Swing, gate length and octave range matter more than the number of direction modes.
How we picked these arpeggiators
Each entry was checked for stable MIDI timing (no drifting or dropped notes at odd buffer sizes), a working download and host compatibility. Arpeggiators that only worked inside one legacy DAW environment were left off.
Getting started
Insert the arpeggiator as a MIDI effect before your synth, enable latch, and record the MIDI output if your DAW supports it — printed MIDI is easier to arrange than a live arp. Sync to host tempo and start at 1/16 notes with a short gate.
