Compressors differ in how they grab and release — VCA designs are precise, FET designs are fast and aggressive, optical designs are smooth and slow. Free plugins now model all three well, so choose by the job, not the hype.
We checked every compressor for honest metering, working sidechain/hp-filter options where advertised, and artefact-free release behaviour on real program material. Anything that pumped unpredictably at moderate settings was left off.
Start with a 3:1 ratio, slow attack, medium release, and lower the threshold until you see 2–3 dB of reduction on the loudest parts. Match output level to input so you hear the compression, not just loudness. On a mix bus, 1–2 dB of glue is plenty.
