How to choose a free EQ
EQ splits into transparent parametric tools for surgical work and analogue-modelled designs that add character. A serious free setup has one of each — and both kinds are well represented below.
- A parametric EQ with a spectrum analyser speeds up finding resonances enormously.
- Mid/side mode lets you clean the sides of a mix without touching the centre vocal.
- Analogue-modelled EQs are for broad musical moves, not narrow cuts.
- Linear-phase mode matters mainly on the master bus or parallel chains.
How we picked these EQs
Every EQ here was tested for clean high-frequency boosts (no harshness or ringing at sensible Q), accurate metering and stable automation. We favoured plugins with resizable interfaces and current 64-bit formats.
Getting started
Cut before you boost: sweep a narrow bell up to find harsh resonances, pull them down a few dB, then make broad tonal moves. High-pass everything that isn't bass or kick — low-end rumble you can't hear still eats headroom.
