Free orchestral libraries vary enormously — some are full sampled sections with multiple articulations, others are single-mic teaser patches. The things that matter are articulation coverage, sample quality and how much RAM the instrument wants.
Every library here downloads in full for free and loads in a current plugin format or open sampler. We favoured instruments with genuinely playable articulations and sensible key-switching over one-dynamic demo patches, and dropped anything whose download had silently expired.
Start with an ensemble strings patch and write a simple four-bar progression — if the legato transitions sound smooth at slow tempos, the library will serve you well. Add gentle hall reverb from our reverb category to glue sections together, and keep velocities varied to avoid the machine-gun effect.
