Reverb is the effect people over-buy first and over-use forever, so it's worth knowing what actually separates the good free ones from the abandonware. The three things that matter are tail quality, CPU cost and control layout — everything else is marketing.
Every reverb listed here was checked for a working download link, a current format (VST3, AU or CLAP) and reasonable CPU use in a real session. We dropped anything that required a long-dead wrapper, bundled adware installers, or hadn't loaded in a modern DAW for years.
If you only download one, take a clean algorithmic plate or hall first — it covers vocals, drums and synths. Add a convolution reverb second for realistic spaces, and a shimmer or modulated reverb last for sound design. Put your main reverb on a send/return bus so multiple tracks share one instance.
